When The Gym Is Not An Option | 3 Tips For At Home Fitness Success
Jul 18, 2022When I was 80 pounds overweight, heading to the gym was NOT an option for me.
I was so insecure, had no clue how the machines worked, and was way too scared to ask. The thought of having people looking at me at that size, watching me struggle was not high on my list of things to do...
So it was hands down a total no go for me!
The funny thing about that time is, I seriously had my shit together in so many areas of my life, but I couldn't for the life of me get a handle on my weight, no matter what I did.
I was so hard on myself and truthfully, my reflection would bring me to tears and fits of rage in the closet, as I threw around clothes that I could never squeeze in to.
That was over 20 years ago.
Today, I can finally say that I found a solution to my anxiety over the gym that ultimately has helped me grow my confidence and lose that weight I hated all those years ago.
I know I am not alone in the desire to feel better and be healthier, I also know I'm not the only women on the planet who's way too insecure to head to their local gym...
So with that, here are some of my tips for avoiding the gym but still seeing success with your health and fitness goals.
1. At Home Workouts
The virtual trainers that I chose never judged me, they kept it simple, it didn’t matter that I was so out of shape and couldn’t do the moves or even that I modified the whole thing.
They actually didn't say a word. And they didn't look, laugh or make fun of me (all the real fears that I had about the gym all those years ago).
Now, these daily at home workouts have become a habit. And they are something my daughter sees me do.
I actually often wonder to myself, what if I hadn’t started? What if I’d let all those fears of going to a gym stop me? I honestly can’t imagine it - I definitely wouldn’t be the person or Mom I am now.
2. Start Small
The truth is, getting in shape takes time.
Getting comfortable with working out and making it a habit takes a ton of time.
Give yourself some grace and do what you can. When you're working out at home no one is there to grade you. It's only you!
3. Find Accountability
I get it, it's great when it's just you, and no one is judging you...
But let me tell you, we all need some motivation and a little push o get going.
I know I needed (and still sometimes need) that for sure. Which why community is so key.
So maybe ask some friends to do this with you. Or possibly you and your partner do it together. Workout at the same time or create a schedule and check in with each other to make sure you get it done for the day.
For me, I didn't even want to tell people that I was wanting to lose weight, I was so afraid that I would fail like every time before.
So I found a virtual community and that was such a game changer for me. We helped each other daily, they were there 24/7 if I needed a kick in the butt or some support.
I strongly believe that this can be the difference between success and failure when it comes to using at home fitness as an alternative to going to a gym.
